Translating the Common European Sales Law into 23 Language Versions: Business as Usual?
woensdag, 22 februari 2012
Ingemar Strandvik (Quality Manager, the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation (DGT), Brussels). Monday, 27 February 2012, 15:00 - 16:30. Seminar Centre for the Study of European Contract Law and the Amsterdam Circle for Law and Language

Aankondiging UvA, FdR - The newly proposed EU regulation on a Common European Sales Law (CESL) is the latest step in the advancement in the harmonization of contract law in the EU. In the light of the direct effect of the Regulation introducing the Common European Sales Law and the emphasis on clear definitions of common fundamental legal concepts, it is vital that all 23 equally authentic language versions will display adequate correspondence.

The speaker will give insights in the translation procedures and processes that are in place to ensure the best possible result. Based on input from translators in various language departments who were consulted for this presentation, the speaker will discuss some of the provisions of the CESL to illuminate terminological choices made, difficulties encountered and other matters relevant to the role of translation in the legislative procedure.

The presentation is intended for lawyers, legal scholars, legal translators and linguists alike. Students are particularly invited to attend.
